My thoughts on recent events with Cecil the Lion

Hello All! It has been awhile since I last posted once again, I know I'm really bad with that :) So I’ve finally reached a point where I feel like I can make a post with some of my views on current world events regarding our ecosystem and animal species.

As most of you know, Cecil the Lion in Zimbabwe was hunted illegally by a U.S Dentist and was shot with a bow and arrow that did not kill him immediately but instead
wounded the majestic lion and he bled out over 40 hours as they tracked him through the night and finally shot him to finish him off. They then cut off his head and skinned the lion and left
what is remaining to be eaten by scavengers in an area that was supposed to be off limits for hunting to begin with.

Many of us are animal conservationists or pet lovers and could not imagine doing something like this to any animal and the outraged has shown as the hunter’s Dentist clinic was forced to shut down
and he had to go into hiding due to the response by animal rights protesters. Depending on the views of each particular person, some of this can be viewed as extreme or needed in the eyes of many of us.
My personal belief is that Hunting to manage populations (which helps limit the spreads of certain disease in some species) and to provide food on the table at home is the only reasons that I can
see as one who enjoys nature and the animals who fill it would be acceptable. Believe it or not a lot of the licenses and permits used by normal hunters who are providing for their families actually fund a large percentage of Conservation work done around the world to preserve threatened and endangered species and their habitats.

However trapping, poisoning, aerial shooting and trophy hunting is despicable and showcases the depths that we can go as a race to destroy and kill for our personal enjoyment.
In regards to trophy hunting I believe that this should be banned as the thought of paying large sums of money to go and kill majestic predators and exotic species in different countries to stuff their heads and hang them on the wall for an ego boost is unimaginable for me. Why? I asked my wife at one of our dinners lately, “Why would someone wake up and say, I want to pay 50,000 dollars to go to Africa and hunt a lion for my wall.” It is honestly so hard for me to see how many elephants and rhinos are being killed for their horns, how many whales and sharks are being slaughtered illegally in our waters and the governments aren’t taking enough drastic measures to stop it.

Also the Endangered Species Act is being the target on a daily basis of attacks from Congress and the Senate to try and dismiss its power and remove animals that have not fully recovered. We also see large scale competition hunts for Coyotes, wolves and
other predators, where even families go out and kill in masses to see if they can get the most in a select time period. It is one of the most horrific and barbaric sights one can see where rows of animals are lined up or placed in piles or hung up like clothes.

We need to call and write to our representatives, senators and local government to support Anti-Poaching and Illegal Animal trade Laws, establish correct TNR procedures in our communities and end the cruelty regarding the use of animals for Circuses and sideshow events, as well as exotic pet ownership being banned. We can no longer afford to have reservations unpatrolled and people freely able attack endangered species when they are supposed to be protected.

Beliefs on conservation vary and it’s difficult for humans to get together on a common level as some are too sensitive and others seem to have no emotion. I see the same people who complain about people not taking care of dogs and cats in a correct manner, being the same ones who post and support organizations like PETA who kill thousands of animals every year(Google if you don’t know). You can’t afford to be hypocrites in the fight on animal welfare, and its important that we don’t lose support of the general population by acting to extreme over issues that may not be extreme, its just your personality to go all out. Posting hate mail and acting crazy will not help us get closer to our goal. We need to start educating the youth and the other younger generations on the importance of the environment and the animals within it. Please check back for future posts and articles!

Quarterly Wolf Marks!

News!

So its been a wild year so far for me, as my career has taken some advancement and I haven't had enough time to update the blog. However I am looking for some writers to contribute, so if you love wolves or any wildlife for that manner and would like to have your articles featured, please message the facebook page with your info!

One of the key topics this year has been the attempted removal of the wolves from the Endangered species list. U.S. Congress has made several riders and bills attempting to take the federal protection off of several states not just for wolves, but for other wildlife as well. I believe that we need to allow more time for the wolves to expand to their natural regions. We also need to make sure to not place the wolf on a pedastal and expect them never to be recovered and removed from ESA. You can stand up and have your voice heard by emailing or calling at the following link: http://www.howlingforwolves.org/

                                          New Pups!

For some Father's Day news! Wolf Haven International has announced the birth of 3 Mexican Wolves' litters! A total of 10 pups total which equates to over 10% of total Lobos in the wild now. Hopefully we can the government to take a more aggressive approach to the species survival program. For more information on the pups, head over to www.wolfhaven.org .

Last push to save the Iberian Wolf Recovery Centre!

So as some of you may know the Iberian wolf is unique and extremely threatened in its native lands and the IWRC needs help for the last installment to purchase the lands it sits on! Visit the link under this paragraph to donate and at least share on facebook, twitter etc!

Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks, including a few interviews with Top experts in the field!

Heroes of the wolves! Red Wolf Coalition!

Heroes of the wolves

The third in a series of articles about Wolf Centers and Preserves across North America

Today marks a return to the Heroes of the wolves series, and with so much in the news today about the red wolves of the Southeast United States, it only makes sense that I would chose the Red Wolf Coalition of North Carolina. They are on the front lines of fighting the propaganda against the species and the battle to educate the adults and more important, the children of the future generations to respect and co-exist with these amazing creatures.

For those who are not aware, the red wolf population has been under attack with several shot and found dead in and around the protected habitat. The population is dwindling under 100 in the wild and in a stretch between Oct and Nov in 2013, 7 were found killed. This is a tragic and horrible way for the majestic red wolves to have to survive.

I was able to interview the Red Wolf Coalition's very own executive director Kim Wheeler to find out how they are helping to continue the success of the SSP of the red wolf. Here's what she had to say.

#1- Can you explain the purpose of the Red Wolf Coalition and why you originally started?

-The Coalition was started in 1998 by one of the red wolf field biologists that saw a need for an NGO to aid Red wolf education and outreach.  Our mission is to advocate for the long term survival of red wolf populations by teaching about the red wolf and by fostering public involvement in red wolf conservation.

#2- For those that donate to the Red Wolf Coalition, can you explain where that money goes and how it helps?

-The Coalition is a 501 (c )3 non-profit organization.  Donations received are used tofulfill a number objectives.  Those are educational, operational and on the ground support objectives.

#3- What is your involvement in the USWS Wolf Recovery program, and in particular the Species Survival program for wolves?

-The Coalition has a MOA with the USFWS to conduct education programs at the Red Wolf Education Center in Columbia, NC.  This location is a SSP location, so that is our involvement.

#4- What is your views on the current struggle with Congress over federal protection?

-The debate about wolves currently is very centered on gray wolf protections.  That debate would take a lot of time to lay out and I am not as well versed on that subject matter to give you a condensed answer for your article.

#5- What is the RWC's long term goals?

-To advocate for the long term survival of red wolves.

#6- What is your daily routine like being the Executive Director?

-Every day is different.  I am the only paid staff, so I do everything from clean the office to give presentations locally and throughout the state and US.  Some days are office days to keep the organization running and then the next day I may be at the REC all day giving programs.  I also Skype into classrooms across the country.

#7- Do you feel enough is done to protect the small population of red wolfs we have left?

-No.  Our country is at a crossroads in deciding the importance of wildlife and more importantly endangered species.  I recognize that we are in difficult economic times, but the answer is not to give up on species that our government pledged to recover through the Endangered Species Act just because we think the money should be spent elsewhere.  The American people asked Congress to set up an organization to manage and protect valuable land and wildlife in our country.  The US Fish & Wildlife was given that task and should continue to uphold their obligations.

The Red Wolf Coalition is truly a Hero of the Wolf and you can help them continue to be on the fore front by donating, sharing the news, and following and liking their Facebook and twitter which you can find at the bottom of this article.

Walking one paw at a time!

An Article regarding wolf paw anatomy

Hello there fellow wolf supporters and conservationists! I'm back from a rather long break from the scene as I started a rather important position at my work and also suffered the loss of 3 grandparents in 12 months. So without further delay, I wanted to jump back in the saddle and let you know I will be delivering content on a weekly basis from this point on, starting now.

Today's topic is the anatomy of the wolf paw and hopefully a few facts that most of us are unaware of!

Wolves are digitigrades which is an animal that stands or walks on its digits (or toes). The wolf's foot consists of five toes on the front of their foot and four toes on the back paws. The claws, other than the most obvious of function act as traction when going over slippery surfaces such as frozen lakes and wet muddy ground. The paw itself has fleshy pads on the base which also helps with the traction and the toes which are partly webbed can actually spread out and act like snowshoes in deep snow and also assist with swimming when needed.

The wolf can run just about 30-35 mph and is known to travel distances up to 18 miles in a trot. Wolves tend to patrol territory for other pack intrusion and also to look for prey. They have scent glands located between the toes that leave chemical markers behind for navigation as well as marking their land.

Here is an amazing video from Wolf Center's Sanctuary in Winchester Idaho:

Pretty amazing huh?

Well the next article in line will be on the elusive Iberian wolves of Portuagal/Spain. So until next time, stay frosty!

Quarterly Wolf Marks!

Well, a new year is already a quarter deep, and I'm happy to say that I am back into a position to write once more. I would appreciate it dearly if you went to our facebook page at the link in the top right, and clicked the like button :)

So, here is some of the brief articles and news I've ran across as of late:

New Litter of Red Wolves!
On April 22, 2013, 5 Red wolf pups were born to Taladu, at the The Jackson Zoo in Jackson, Mississippi. The litter consisted of 1 female and 4 males! Here is a picture of one of the little pups!

Happy 66th Birthday to Defenders of Wildlife!

Defenders of Wildlife celebrated its 66th year saving various animals and defending their rights to exist on planet earth.  Let's continue to support them battle against corruption and wolf rights!

Discover Project Coyote!

Over the holidays I stumbled across this website and organization and have to say I applaud the work they are doing. Project Coyote is an organization that is trying to curb the violence and bad reputation that the cousin of the wolf receives due to its abundance in places humans reside. They have a facebook page as well, that you can head over to Here.

15th Anniversary of Mexican Gray Wolf Reintroduction!

Its been 15 years since the Mexican Lobo has been released into its natural habitat. I believe that we need to do more as a nation to ensure this species never gets back to the brink of extinction again. Read the full article Here. The Federal Government just released new pairs into the wild, so check out it out Here!

Also please help support the Mexican Gray Wolves by signing this Petition!

Stay tuned for a special release article coming tomorrow on the Government's proposal to remove the wolf off the endangered species list!

Enemy of the state- A sad war against the wolf

As a wolf enthusiast, I can no longer understand how some states are allowing the wolf and other predator's hunting seasons get out of hand. Management is key, and I'm not one that says we shouldn't control populations when needed. However, I am fully against trapping, aerial shooting, hunting all year year long(especially during gestation months), and night hunting.

I know it can be hard to understand any states having a hunting season, and I think its even worst when states decide to go overboard, and basically declare war on the wolf. Now, a lot of people out there don't understand this, but the wolf is actually a strong survivalist and even with all the illegal shootings, the ridiculous state management plans, the wolf population is growing far greater then first expected. Now do I feel like the numbers will ever be like they were in the early 1900s? No,and a large reason for that is the growing human population and destroyed habitat for the species.

Wolfs are just like any other predator, and really thrive in the absence of humans. In huge dense forest, the creamy white ice plains and tundra, and in the deserts of the southwest, the wolf will fill its surroundings with the sound of its howl, and the presence of a true apex predator. No one can expect these graceful animals to be living in the backyards of the suburbs and the streets of the cities. Coyotes are in that niche and are hunted like vermin. Thats not what I want for the wolf. I don't want centers and zoos filled with it, or to see it while driving down I-95. I want to know its free, and roaming in acres of amazing lands.

The problem with the states plans for management is, they really start killing way to many, way to early. As well as the inhumane ways they choose to operate, they need to focus on protecting the environment that is home to the wolves, and not build new condos, and then get upset the wolves are eating the neighbors trash, when last year it was a den site in the middle of the forest.

All animals are hunted, and that is not my place to tell others whether they should do it or not. That being said, for protected animals, the fines and penalties should be raised ten fold. Killing an endangered species should be a minimal of 6 months in jail, and 5,000 dollar fine. Poachers know what they are doing, and we do not have the right to wipe another species out.

I love wolves, and the rest of the animal world as well. I vote against actions I feel are not humane, or plainly out of line. However, we as conservationist need to pick our battles, and not cry "wolf" at the hint of anything but 100% our way of thinking. If wolves are attacking livestock, and that states wolf population is blooming, then if the F&W division find the wolves doing it are threatening the area(Obviously within reason), they have to remove them. Just as you would do for a bear, or mountain lion etc. We can not just expect otherwise.

Make sure you do your best for the wolf and you can help by voting. Here are the links!
